Carousel of Kickers. Bills Release Lindell

Rian Lindell was cut 8.19.13

The kicking carousel made another revolution today as the Buffalo Bills released their longtime kicker, Rian Lindell. Lindell joins now-former dolphin kicker Dan Carpenter in the unemployment line, salary cap casualties in a weak special teams marketplace.

Meanwhile in Green Bay, the Packers are currently saddled with a $2.4 Million cap number for shaky kicker, Mason Crosby. The Titletown booter's woes are well documented here on the Daily Dope Sheet, having converted a paltry 63.6% of his field goal attempts last season (league worst).

Crosby is in competition with newcomer Giorgio Tavecchio. "Sergio," as head coach Mike McCarthy once mistakenly called him, has been much more accurate than Crosby, though his leg is nowhere near as strong.

Followers of DDS are familiar with the sentiment that the Packers would be foolish not to pursue Dan Carpenter. Now it appears the market is flush with talent, and the team would be highly remiss in not examining these options. Faith in the kicking game is fickle, and far too important to leave well enough alone.

Did Crosby show you enough on Saturday at St. Louis? Is Tavecchio the guy? Should the team look elsewhere? Tell me what you think.

  1. Packers would be good to at least toss a flier to either Carpenter or Lindell, but if they're not going to do that; make a decision soon. I think just between Crosby and Tevacchio, Giorgio is winning out, he's been more consistent over all than Crosby, more accurate as we know....and this talk of his leg not being powerful enough in regards to mainly kickoffs, well I think Sergio put that to rest when he kicked off in the game vs the Rams, did anyone see that kick ???
Now granted anything can change between today and when the Packers make a decision who to go with, but so far up to this point I'm siding with Tevacchio camp.

  2. The tenor from the staff in GB right now seems to be favorable for Crosby. The Packers always prioritize "their guys" first, and I think they were waiting for a good enough showing from Mason to warrant keeping him. I personally don't think he's been accurate enough when you consider his body of work in total, but there's something to be said for waiting for a solid kicker to shake a funk. Seems like he's on an upward trend, and his leg strength and speed really are worlds better than Giorgio Tavecchio. The first cuts are in a matter of days, so we'll know more soon. As much as the fan in me wants the team to bring in a FA leg, I have a feeling TT wants to stick it out with Crosby. Could be wrong. We'll see!

  3. I too think Tevacchio is winning the position at this point. The only consern I have is McCarthy's love affair with Crosby. Last year Mac gave to much slack on Crosby's leash, constantly saying "Crosby is our guy and that's that". He said he would bring in competition this year, and that's exactly what he did. Now that he has, he can not feel guilty about sticking with Crosby. If we were going to bring in more competition, we would have already. Like the Daily Dope said before, "expect a kicker to be cut this week".
