This time around, the "Daily D'oh! Award" goes to a spectator instead of a sportsman. Razzing an opposing player is one thing, but there is a line. Certainly, a very particular Bears fan crossed that line on Monday night. As the Packers were heading into the locker-room after their nail-biting 20-17 loss to the Bears at Soldier Field, Green Bay safety Nick Collins was verbally engaged by a fan. As the story goes, the fan spit on Collins and then shouted a few racial epithets. Collins then threw his mouth guard at the fan. No, the fan has not been identified and, yes, that is a picture of Mike Myers as a "superfan" character on SNL... but you get the idea. Joking aside, this is just not ok. The sports field is supposed to be the great equalizer, where athletes of all races, religions, and ilk may compete for human glory. In this day and age there is simply no excuse for this kind of behavior. Apparently this fan likes to party like it's 1929. By the way, the Packers won the division over the Bears during that season. A sign of things to come? Let's hope so. In any case, I'm pouring out a Schlitz tonight for Nick Collins, who really took one on the chin Monday night. Fortunately, after further review, the Bears still suck.

I went to a Bears message board and there were fans, not all, but a few making excuses for that fan that used a racial slur, disgusting.
ReplyDeleteEven more reason to hate da bears.
well i don't want to lump all bears fans into one category. that'd be a little hypocritical given the nature of this story... the bottom line is there is no excuse to use a racial slur.
