Tuesday the league announced that Clay Matthews is the NFC Defensive Player of the Week. Facing the lowly Buffalo Bills in week 2, Matthews recorded 3 sacks for the second straight game, becoming the first player in franchise history to accomplish the feat. He also notched 5 tackles, 4 of them for a loss. In a locker room interview, Clay laughed off the notion that he is on pace for a 48 sack season, but also said he was well aware of the current NFL sack record (22.5 courtesy of Michael Strahan of the New York $5 Footlongs, er.. Giants). This is Clay's second Player of the Week award in as many seasons. Again, I must caution Jay Cutler this week to be on the lookout for that blurry #52, because if it comes into focus, you've probably already been sacked for a loss. Godspeed Clay, and congratulations!
An interesting side note: Clay's father, also named Clay, twice won the same award for his efforts as a Cleveland Brown. That makes them the only father and son team to bring in this award. Who needs Wranglers? I need me some Matthews genes!
