Sibling Selections: Chris' 1st Rnd Mock v2.0

As the draft draws ever closer, the mocks I'm seeing are becoming less fuzzy. My brother Chris has poured plenty of focus into fine-tuning his first round mock-up, and he's finally got a v2.0 to show for it. So without further adieu...

---------------------------------------------------

The biggest amendment Chris has made here is bumping Auburn QB Cam Newton up to the number one overall pick. While I'm certain that he'll be a flop on some level, I'm also just as certain that Carolina is still looking for their starting QB. Some analysts have pointed to the failed Jimmy Clausen experiment as evidence that the Panthers are unlikely to gamble on yet another hype-heavy QB with an early draft pick. But the fact of the matter is that a high percentage of the top-end NCAA QB class don't pan out in the NFL, and a need is a need. I agree with Chris here. I think the Panthers go double or nothing and make the risky Newton pick. They pretty much have to.

Another interesting note is that Chris, along with many other analysts, have the first OL of the draft going to the Detroit Lions in tackle Anthony Castonzo of Boston College. Personally, I don't think we'll have to wait until the 13th overall pick to see an offensive lineman go. The position is the second most important in the draft, and is quickly trending towards the first. I do at least agree that the Lions need linemen like nobody's business. They're clearly committed to man-child QB Matthew Stafford for the long haul, but if their o-line doesn't stop leaking defenders like a pasta strainer, it's going to be the Shaun Hill/Drew Stanton show all over again (advantage Stanton for his version of the Dougie).

Finally, Chris has adjusted his Packers pick to Villanova tackle Ben Ijalana. I think this is a good call. While I'm not sure exactly which tackle the Packers will take, I know for sure that Colorado's Nate Solder will be gone by #32, so Ijalana is a safer bet. I really think that OT is just as important for the Packers this year as it was last year. They need to continue to show they are committed to protecting their investment in QB Aaron Rodgers, and frankly the line did not perform drastically better in 2010 than it did in 2009, Super Bowl ring notwithstanding.

That's all for now. I'm still not talking about the CBA and I'm still not devoting much personal time to predicting the Packers draft. Stay tuned for Chris' mock v3.0, as I understand it's coming soon!
